Macron to visit Warsaw on Thursday to discuss Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected in Warsaw on Thursday where he will take stock of the tripartite meeting he had with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris last weekend, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday.

“The day after tomorrow, President Macron will be here, he will want to inform about the results of the Paris talks, where the meeting took place with President Trump and President Zelensky”, Donald Tusk said at a government meeting. According to the Elysée, Emmanuel Macron “will discuss with Donald Tusk the issue of European support for Ukraine in a new transatlantic context, as well as in view of the Polish presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2025.” The head of state will also meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Emmanuel Macron welcomed Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky for a tripartite meeting at the Elysée Palace on Saturday, on the sidelines of the reopening ceremonies of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. This meeting was “effective and productive,” the Ukrainian president said on Saturday. Donald Trump, who will officially take office on January 20, called on Sunday for “an immediate ceasefire” and for negotiations to end the war in Ukraine to begin immediately.

Ukraine to raise NATO invitation, security guarantees at summit with European allies

Volodymyr Zelenskyy will raise the issue of inviting Ukraine to NATO and introducing security guarantees at a summit with its European partners later this month, the Ukrainian president's office said on Tuesday.

Ukraine announced on Monday that it plans to hold a summit in December with its key European allies to coordinate a common position and ensure that Ukraine is in a strong position on the battlefield for possible negotiations.

“One of the issues on the agenda of this meeting will certainly be the one we are discussing now, namely obtaining a membership application and the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine until it joins NATO,” said Igor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office.

He added that there would also be discussions on military aid to Ukraine. These issues were also raised during Volodymyr Zelensky's meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron over the weekend, he added. “It is absolutely clear that the issue of Ukraine's accession to NATO, unfortunately, remains unrealizable at the moment. I mean that as long as Russian aggression against Ukraine continues, we will not win. That is why, today, we need appropriate guarantees for our security before joining NATO”, Igor Zhovkva said.

Ukraine's president on Monday revived the controversial idea, put forward in February by Emmanuel Macron, of deploying European troops on Ukrainian territory, pending the country's integration into NATO ranks.

Russian strikes kill three in Zaporizhzhia

Three people were killed and 16 wounded when a Russian missile struck a private clinic in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday, and many more were trapped under the rubble, officials said. Rescuers are searching for at least eight more people, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said on the Telegram messaging app.

According to him, one person was in serious condition and two doctors were among the wounded. Anna Zubchenko, a 26-year-old ophthalmologist, was working in her office when the attack happened. She helped pull out her partially buried colleague, who was later evacuated by rescuers. She said she was “even more frightened by the silence,” because no one was shouting around her.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack “brutal” and issued a renewed appeal to allies to provide air defenses to Ukraine. “The world has enough systems to do this. The issue depends entirely on political decisions: decisions of the US administration, European leaders and other partners in the world,” he said on X, adding that Ukraine had provided allies with a list of the necessary elements.

Earlier in the day, Russian missile strikes on the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine injured 10 people and damaged an administrative building, according to the regional governor. Governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces carried out two missile attacks on the town of Zlatopil. The first strike damaged non-residential buildings and cars, while the second damaged an administrative building.
