The mayor of Mèze Thierry Baeza confirms that he wants to take over the management of drinking water, entrusted to the Agglo de Sète since January 1, 2020. Midi Libre – V.L.
“I can hear that Sète, a city center, is privileged. But crumbs are fine for a while”: Thiery Baëza, mayor of Mèze, still rants about the management of water by Sète Agglopôle.
Are you still angry about the water management by the Agglo de Sète ?
Of course. Since 2020 and the transfer to Sète Agglopôle, I have been angry. With our management system, we had the cheapest water of the fourteen municipalities. It still is, but we suffered a first big increase of 8.9%, then 8.4%. In total, that's +20.6% in 4 years. To justify the increases, I am told that work is needed. But we have the safest network for linear index losses.
Yes, but Mèze remains despite everything the municipality of the territory where the price of the cubic meter is the least expensive…
The goal of the Agglo de Sète is to harmonize prices, regardless of management. I disagree. We have proven that with our own management and good management, we can have lower prices than others. In municipal management, for example, we had a payroll of €300,000. With the Agglo, it went up to €657,000! Nothing justifies such an increase. I am told that Sète is united. But then let's talk about sanitation… It's quite simple: since we have been at the Agglo, everything has increased for fewer services. I want to be in a common pot but there would still have to be a return and there isn't.

Do you confirm that you want to take over the management of water ?
Of course. We hope for 2026. We were delayed by the absence of a DGS (Director General of Services, Editor's note). We will get down to it in 2025 and we will succeed. We will take over this water management that we should never have left to the Agglo.
Isn't the harmonization of water rates and management, however, the voice of reason in relation to a resource that will become more and more precious? ?
For three years now, in Mèze, we have recorded a drop in water consumption despite a growing number of subscribers. This shows that people are paying attention. We will continue to make efforts to raise awareness.
An Agglomeration is made to pool services that cost as little as possible in the end. Except that since we started pooling, we have only suffered increases with fewer and fewer services, like the territorial brigades or the sorting ambassadors while the instruction of building permits and the Gemapi are now paid for… I am not an anti-Agglomeration and I can understand that the city center is privileged. But the crumbs policy, that's fine for a while!
