We tested the Samsung Galaxy S25 in preview: the 3 things to remember

Just a few days after CES in Las Vegas, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S25 with great fanfare. From California, the South Korean company held a grandiose conference to shed light on its new flagships. A little too much ? Maybe not.

Because in 2025, it takes a lot to continue to make people dream with a smartphone. Having reached maturity, this market is experiencing its most difficult years. The lack of major innovation is pushing back the renewal period for consumers. In a few years, we have gone from a replacement every two years to every three years.

To give new impetus to the smartphone, manufacturers are now counting on AI. Samsung is one of the first brands to invest a lot of money and time in this area. In 2024, Galaxy AI was a first step in this transformation by AI. In 2025, the Korean says it wants to combine ” hardware excellence with software revolution “. The Galaxy S25 has the heavy responsibility of embodying this revolution. Do they have shoulders broad enough to fulfill this mission ? At first glance, yes.

Like Apple, Samsung doesn't really shake up the aesthetic codes of its flagships. Why change a winning team ? That the Whether we like the brand or not, we have to recognize a certain talent in the design team.

The 2025 vintage is also part of a certain continuity. Samsung has still made some adjustments to homogenize the range. Thus, all models are based on a chassis with flat edges and rounded corners. Enough to reassure those who were resistant to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, whose protruding edges were not unanimously appreciated.

All models are thinner (-0.4 mm) and a tiny bit lighter. In the hand, the weight distribution is perfect. The Galaxy S25 logically seems tiny next to the Ultra. In 2025, we could even call it a compact smartphone.

Samsung has also worked on sustainability. The Galaxy S25s are all IP69 certified and covered with the latest generation Gorilla Glass Armor protective glass. The brand also ensures a 7-year update support . Finally, the entire range gets a nice 8.5/10 repairability index.

Last year, we wondered how Samsung could still surprise us in terms of design. Without revising his recipe, he actually succeeds in provoking the wow effect (don't trust the photos, they don't do justice to reality).

Special mention to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which is particularly attractive. The integration of its slightly larger screen (6.9 inches compared to 6.8 inches for the previous generation) in a thinner chassis has a lot to do with it. The handling is also more pleasant. So many small adjustments that make the difference. If the devil is in the details, Samsung is the lord of hell.

On the hardware side, Samsung is resting on its laurels. The three models integrate the same screen technologies (Dynamic AMOLED LTPO), the same batteries and the same charging power (25W for the S25, 45W for the other two) as the previous generation. The photographic equipment does not change either, with the exception of the Galaxy S25 Ultra which welcomes a new 50 MP sensor associated with its ultra-wide-angle lens.

The only notable innovation: the integration of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipoptimized for the Galaxy S25. It promises improved CPU performance (+37%), GPU (+32%) and NPU (+43%). For the first time, all models, including the smallest, have 12 GB of RAM. This arsenal therefore promises phenomenal power that we will not fail to measure during a more in-depth test.

This hardware stagnation is not the result of any laziness. The Galaxy S25s indeed have all the best that is currently available. The lack of major hardware development will certainly concern all the premium smartphones launched this year. Competitors who have already announced their flagship models (Honor, OnePlus, OPPO) are also marking time for the simple reason that it is impossible to do more today. 2025, even more than 2024, will be the year of the software revolution.

« Changing the way we interact with a smartphone ». This is the ambition displayed by Samsung. Last year, the brand launched Galaxy AI, a series of AI-boosted features, at the same time as its Galaxy S24 . Throughout the year, they have been featured on all ranges. Samsung therefore surveyed its users to find out if they used all of these tools. The answer: very little.

After the announcement effect, users ultimately had very little taste of the Galaxy AI features due, in particular, to thenumerous friction to access it.The engineers have therefore revised their copy to simplify access to these tools powered by artificial intelligence.

To do this, Samsung is making a symbolic change: Bixby is finally taking its leave. From now on, a long press on the power button wakes up Gemini, Google's AI, as well as its conversational counterpart Gemini Live. Then, you just have to ask it to access various tools and/or information.

To support this change, Samsung is launching Cross app actions, a multimodal artificial intelligence tool. This feature allows several applications to communicate with each other to save time. For example, you can ask Gemini to search for a vegetarian restaurant, kids & pets friendly located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris and then send a message to a specific contact to arrange a meeting. Make your request by voice, the AI takes care of everything.

Unfortunately, we were not able to try this feature, which will only be available at launch on February 7. But Samsung's demonstrations seemed impressive to us. Firstly, by the speed of execution, but also by the number of possible combinations. All Google applications, Samsung's own apps, as well as WhatsApp and Spotify support Action cross app. So there will be plenty to do.

Conversational AI also allows searches in settings and applications. No more wasted minutes searching through settings, Gemini does it with a simple voice request.

In addition to this simplified access, Samsung has also developed features that bring AI to the user based on their usage and routines. Now Baris a small pill-shaped bar that appears at the bottom of the lock screen. It provides contextual information based on usage. It displays, among other things, sports scores, directions, traffic information, the timer, the music player, and translation. Over a hundred applications are compatible with Now Bar.

Now Brief transforms the smartphone into a full-fledged personal assistant. Every morning, for every trip or event as well as every evening, AI pushes a summary of relevant information based on the user’s habits. Everything is displayed on a single page for a quick overview. Over time, the elements displayed adapt better and better to the routines.

Finally, Samsung is taking advantage of the arrival of the Galaxy S25 to launch new creative tools. Best Pose (already seen on the Pixel) allows you to present all the subjects of a photo in their best light. TheAI Editing allows, as its name suggests, to create an edit automatically in a few seconds from a selection of videos.

Finally, Gum audio allows you to filter out unwanted noise on a video. The user can opt for automatic cleaning or choose from six criteria: voice, music, wind, noise, crowd, nature.

Like Apple, Honor or Google, Samsung does not surprise. If we were a little mean, we would say that the Galaxy S25 are just Galaxy S24 with a new chip. But this conclusion would be a bit reductive.

It is true that the hardware changes little. The Galaxy S25 integrates the same screens, batteries, photo sensors and charging systems as their predecessors. But that's not the main point. In 2025, the revolution will be software-based. After laying their first stones in 2024, manufacturers will therefore move up a gear.

In any case, this is the promise made by Samsung with the improvements made to Galaxy AI, more complete and easier to access than ever. It remains to be seen whether they really work on a daily basis and, above all, whether they really transform the way we use a smartphone. Furthermore, if these features are deployed on the Galaxy S24, turning to an S25 would only be relevant for owners of a smartphone that is at least 3 or 4 years old. Enough to call into question the annual rate of releases for the entire industry.
