In Montpellier, we want to go to the maximum of what the law proposes.

A new law proposes to strengthen the power of mayors. The president of the Métropole Michaël Delafosse wants to go to the maximum of restrictions as soon as the implementing decrees are published.

It will very soon be more restrictive to rent out your accommodation as a short-term rental, such as Airbnb. “We want to move quickly and we want to go to the maximum of what the latest law proposes”, stressed President Michaël Delafosse at the Metropolitan Council on Tuesday, December 8. A new measure that aims to promote access to permanent housing for residents of the territory. By acting on taxation, tightening housing conditions and strengthening the power of mayors in particular.

“We must avoid museum cities”

Faced with demographic pressure and rising real estate prices, the Montpellier Metropolis has already implemented coercive regulations in 2021 by limiting short-term rentals for primary residences to 120 days. This will soon be limited to 90 days with the new text. An initiative welcomed by the opposition: “Montpellier is gangrened by Aibnb, we must absolutely avoid museum cities”, agreed Alenka Doulain.

The recent law of November 19, 2024 strengthens these tools and the Montpellier Metropolis plans to adapt its regulations to implement these measures as soon as the implementing decrees are published.
