Weather alert: five departments on orange alert for snow, another for strong winds… the Enol depression hits France

According to the Weather Channel, “a depression named Enol formed north of Scotland” this Saturday, December 21, before settling in the Mediterranean this Monday. Ariège, Doubs, Isère, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie are 5 placed on orange snow alert.

“Fed by maritime polar air and a very powerful high-altitude jet stream at nearly 300 km/h, this depression is causing very unsettled weather in the south and east of France until Monday, indicates meteorologist Gilles Matricon. A situation that complicates access to ski resorts.”

Strong winds

Météo France announces on its side of “heavy snowfall”, from the middle mountains. The flakes will stay on the ground from 300 to 400 meters of altitude. The rain/snow limit should rise to 500/700 meters at the best of the day.

“Over the entire episode, we can reach in 48 hours, 10 to 25 cm at 800 m, 40 to 60 cm of snow at around 1,000 m altitude”, forecasts Météo France.

At the same time, Gilles Matricon mentions violent winds in the mountains and near the Mediterranean, especially this morning, with gusts of up to 140 km/h, particularly in Haute-Corse, a department placed on orange alert.
