This Sunday, December 8, 2024, Météo France is still placing 4 departments on orange alert for snow and ice in the south of France, according to its latest 6 a.m. bulletin.

This weekend is marked by a return to calm. After the strong gusts of wind that crossed France yesterday, linked to the Darragh storm, several departments are still on orange alert for “snow and ice”, according to the latest bulletin from Météo France published at 6 a.m. this Sunday, December 8, 2024.

Disruptions until Monday

While the orange alert is lifted and switches to yellow for strong winds, it remains in place for several departments in the south of France for snow and ice. These are Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Snow in the Pyrenees

“Winter episode not exceptional for the Pyrenees but significant enough to make driving conditions difficult in the mid-mountains as well as in certain valleys given the expected quantities of snow”, notes the weather station on its website.

Risk avalanche

“This very disturbed weather is expected to last until Monday with a rain-snow limit that fluctuates between 600 and 800 m over the period. Between this Saturday afternoon and Monday, we expect significant amounts of snow in the Pyrenees, starting in the lower mountains”, she added, it should be noted that these significant snowfalls are accompanied by a northwest wind blowing in strong gusts and likely to form significant snowdrifts (accumulations of snow) starting in the mid-mountains. Finally, the risk of avalanches will increase as the snowpack thickens.”

In Montpellier

In Montpellier, the strong winds of this Saturday, December 7, 2024, forced the City to close several sites, such as the Christmas market and the zoo. They should reopen their doors this Sunday.
