Didier Gosset, honorary dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Lille, details the proposal presented this Wednesday, January 8, from the National Academy of Surgery .
“The President of the Republic said some time ago that he was waiting for bold reform proposals, here is one!” Faced with the dual observation of a shortage of doctors, and a history of “failed”, even “demagogic” reforms of medical studies, Didier Gosset, honorary dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Lille, proposed, this Wednesday, January 8, an unprecedented and “mind-blowing” overhaul of medical studies.
“Innovative”, “free” and “pragmatic”, he says, radical, too, it proposes to cut medical studies by two years, by removing access via LAS licenses, and in“modernizing the programs, unchanged for fifty years”.
“We have two large blocks of chemistry teaching, it is useful for future pharmacists, but useless for doctors”, cites, for example, Didier Gosset, who wants on the other hand “to maintain teaching in human and social sciences”.

We need to improve the level of recruitment, based on Parcoursup and high school grades”, knowing that we also need to “improve the level of high school students, which is catastrophic”, believes Didier Gosset.
“We also need to improve the physical and psychological resistance of students”, he insists, assured that medical studies “would not lose in quality, on the contrary”.
To coordinate the reform, which will meet, he announces “opposition from the conference of deans” of medical schools, he also proposes the creation of a “Ministry of Health and Higher Education in Health”.
According to him, the reform, which he recommends implementing “as of next year”, would allow the rapid injection of “17,000 to 20,000 additional doctors” into the system, and to deal with a shortage that he considers “irreversible”, despite the removal of the numerus clausus. “Given societal developments, two doctors are now needed to replace one person who retires, at a time when needs are increasing with the aging of the population”.
The National Academy of Surgery points out that “15% of patients do not have a primary care physician”, and that appointment times with a specialist are getting longer: 50 days to see a cardiologist, 80 for ophthalmology.
