In addition to the ChatGPT models we are used to, such as GPT-4o, OpenAI has also developed “reasoning” models. In essence, these models were designed for queries that require more thought from the artificial intelligence, such as queries related to mathematics, for example. OpenAI’s first reasoning models, o1 and o1-mini, were released in 2024. And the next generation, o3 and o3-mini, are already being deployed.
As mentioned in a previous article, the o3 model is the basis of the deep search feature that OpenAI has just launched. As for o3-mini, it is already available for users of the paid version of ChatGPT. It replaces the o1-mini model on the ChatGPT model selector. But even with a free account, you can test the new reasoning model o3 mini. “This is the first time that a reasoning model is made available to free ChatGPT users”, OpenAI announced a few days ago.
To use o3-mini for free, simply open ChatGPT, and activate the “Reason” button below the text field.

Thanks to their special skills, OpenAI's reasoning models are able to provide better results for questions related to fields such as mathematics, computer coding, or even scientific questions. And, according to OpenAI's explanations, the o1 model remains its “broadest general knowledge reasoning model.” On its side, “o3-mini provides a specialized alternative for technical fields requiring precision and speed.” This one also offers a compromise between speed and precision, while providing “an average reasoning effort”.
In any case, no matter your field, you can test this model for free today to see if the reasoning capacity can bring you a plus in your use of ChatGPT.
