Le fridgescaping, contraction of “fridge” and “landscaping”, consists of organizing and decorating the interior of your fridge as you would for any room in the house. That's right. Gone are the days of unsightly packaging and food piled up indiscriminately. Introducing elegant glass jars, themed figurines, and even miniature artwork.

This trend, recently spotted by CNN, has roots way before the TikTok era. In 2011, American design consultant Kathy Perdue discussed the idea in a blog post. She advised storing food in pretty bowls and containers and arranging them harmoniously. But it was the advent of social media, and particularly TikTok, that propelled fridgescaping to the forefront.

Millions of views on TikTok

Today, influencers compete in imagination to create ever more original compositions.Lynzi Judish, an early adopter, takes the concept even further by choosing themes for her creations. “The Bridgerton Chronicles”, “The Hobbit”… Every time she opens her fridge, it becomes an immersive experience, where food sits alongside carefully chosen figurines and accessories.

But fridgescaping is not just a style exercise. For its advocates, it is above all a way of rethinking our relationship with food. By making the inside of the fridge more appealing, they hope to encourage healthier eating and reduce food waste. “I have never felt healthier”, says Lynzi Judish, who sees the practice as a “very unexpected side effect”.

The Limits of a Controversial Trend

Like any viral trend, fridgescaping is not immune to criticism. Some see it as the ultimate expression of a society obsessed with appearance and likes on social media. Rebecca Bingham, who doesn't hesitate to arrange thrift-store finds in her fridge, herself admits that fridgescaping “is easy to caricature. She adds:

When you see fridges that look like museum display cases, filled with colourful, non-food items, it highlights the absurdity of making something functional look social media-friendly.

Beyond these aesthetic considerations, there are practical issues. Replacing original packaging with decorative containers can make it harder to track expiration dates. Additionally, using poorly sealed containers increases the risk of cross-contamination between foods. Lynzi Judish warns: “If you're buying antiques, always test for lead before storing food in them.”

Finally, stocking the fridge requires it to use more electricity to maintain the desired temperature. In these times of crisis, wasting energy on “looking pretty” on social media is enough to make you wince.

  • The fridgescapingconsists of decorating the inside of your refrigerator like a living space, replacing packaging with aesthetic containers and adding decorative elements.
  • This trend, popularized on TikTok, aims to make the fridge more attractive to encourage better eating and reduce waste.
  • Although creative, this practice raises many criticisms.
