Who said that there was no more talent in France ? A developer has just published his investigation game called “The Operator”, which has already climbed into the top 3 of the world's best-selling games on Steam since its release on July 22. Developed by Bastien Giafferi, this independent title has already attracted more than 15,000 players in less than 48 hours.

Inspired by the cult series “The X-Files”, The Operator puts the player in the shoes of a virtual investigator tasked with sorting out fact from fiction. Forget about field investigations: here, everything happens behind a screen, like a real pen pusher. The mission ? Check clues and testimonies to track down inconsistencies and false leads in order to help investigators and other field agents.

The game skillfully surfs on the current wave of conspiracy theories, fake news and fact-checking, fitting perfectly into the spirit of the times. Bastien Giafferi, its creator, barely 30 years old, admits to having been inspired by current events, while specifying that “It's a game and it remains something fictitious”.

The game is a hit, and it's not fake news

With its mysterious atmosphere and multiple twists, The Operator has won over an international audience: 40% of sales come from the United States and China. On Steam, the game already has over 1,000 reviews, 92% of which are positive.

Developed solo for two years while Bastien was looking for investors, the project finally brought together a team of six people to refine the story and the soundtrack. “It's really designed like a movie,”, he explains.

Available on PC, Mac, and Linux, The Operator can be watched in a few hours for a price barely more than a Big Mac menu. If the success is confirmed, a sequel could well see the light of day.
