For Amazon, every second is precious. And to streamline operations in its e-commerce division, the tech giant is already relying on artificial intelligence. For example, Amazon already uses technology based on computer vision to eliminate the need to scan barcodes, in order to speed up work in its warehouses. And this year, the group began using similar technology so that its van drivers no longer have to search for the right package, or sort it, at each stop.

The next step, to save seconds, could be the use of smart glasses by its delivery people. This is in any case what a Reuters article indicates, which cites sources close to the case. According to this article, Amazon would develop smart glasses, equipped with a small screen, which would help delivery people navigate around and inside buildings. The idea would be to use this technology to allow delivery people to deliver packages faster. And, since the latter would no longer be required to use GPS, he would be able to carry more boxes.

But for the moment, this project has not been confirmed by Amazon. “We are continually innovating to create an even safer and better delivery experience for drivers”, an Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters. “We also do not comment on our product roadmap.”

Goal: Reduce costs

According to the agency's explanations, all efforts to optimize Amazon's logistics are aimed at reducing the costs of its operations. And since the last stages of delivery represent half the cost of getting items to the consumer, the e-commerce giant is now focusing on this part of the process.

According to Reuters, the glasses developed by Amazon for its delivery people are based on Echo Frames. However, the company is adding a screen. And these glasses for delivery people are also able to take photos that will prove that a package has been delivered. However, at this stage, these glasses are not yet viable. According to Reuters, Amazon is having difficulty creating glasses with an 8-hour battery life without making the gadget too heavy (which would affect comfort).

  • Amazon is already using AI and computer vision to streamline its operations
  • It would also like to equip its delivery people with smart glasses
  • These glasses would save time, thanks to an integrated screen that displays navigation, and which allows the delivery person to have their hands free
