In reality, Diesel XTL (Gas to Liquid or Coal to Liquid) is far from being a new product since it was developed at the beginning of the 20th century. However, it is rather in recent years that XTL diesel has seen growing interest as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Made from vegetable oils and wood pulp, it is compatible with certain vehicles running on diesel (without being vegetable diesel) and allows you to lower up to ;#8217;at 90% of their carbon emissions. What are the specific features of the green fuel for individuals

Previously reserved for professional fleets with their own distribution network, XTL diesel fuel is now available to the general public thanks to a decree dated June 26. It will be available in stations also offering B7 diesel, widely used in Europe since 2018. Thus, this fuel will soon be accessible in a multitude of points of sale, from supermarkets to motorway service areas.

XTL diesel stands out for its composition entirely from renewable resources, unlike B7 which incorporates up to’ with 7% fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The XTL can integrate various sources, ranging from green electricity to gas and biomass. These properties give it the ability to drastically reduce particle and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, positioning it as a fairly interesting ecological alternative.

Compatibility: what you need to know

However, the XTL is not compatible with all oil-fired engines. A recent decision of July 2 establishes a precise list of suitable vehicles, which must be displayed in service stations to guide motorists. For some manufacturers, like Mini or BMW, it's quite easy, since all the diesel engines of these brands designed from 2001 and 2000 respectively are compatible with the XTL.

On the other hand, at Mercedes-Benz for example, only models displaying the XTL marking on the tank are eligible. It is therefore essential to consult the user manual for your vehicle, the recommendations vary considerably depending on the manufacturer.

  • XTL diesel is now available to individuals.
  • Made from 100% renewable resources, XTL reduces up to 90% carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
  • Not all diesel vehicles are compatible with it; hence the importance of checking your vehicle's manual or the list displayed at the service station for confirmation.
