Bruno Le Maire has certainly not been idle since leaving the Ministry of the Economy. While he already serves as a visiting professor at the University of Lausanne, he has just been appointed as an advisor to ASML, the Dutch manufacturer of machines for producing electronic chips. Explanations.

A conditional activity

In a press release published for the occasion, the company indicates that Bruno Le Maire will serve as an advisor to the group's board of directors. We will not know more about the nature of this mission.

In any case, the former minister had previously contacted the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life (HATVP) to obtain its opinion on “his plan to change the corporate purpose” of his company 48 Jacob “in order to provide consulting services” at ASML.

The authority considered on Thursday, December 19 that it “considers that the project envisaged by Mr. Le Maire is compatible with the public functions he has exercised, subject to compliance with certain measures of precaution”.

Thus, Bruno Le Maire must not approach members of the government or his cabinet in office at the same time as him as long as they occupy public functions, as well as the services over which he had authority, specifies BFM Tech. These measures will take effect until the end of a three-year period.

As our colleagues at l’Indépendant rightly point out, the French politician has already worked in the field of semiconductors, while the shortage was raging following the Covid pandemic.

Thus, in 2023, the latter had formalized state aid of nearly 3 billion euros for the construction of a new electronic chip factory of the Franco-Italian group STMicroelectronics with the American GlobalFoundries in France.

Finally, let us note that Bruno Le Maire will be able to communicate directly in the language of Molière with the current president and CEO of ASML who is none other than the Frenchman Christophe Fouquet, who took over the leadership of the group of 42,000 employees last April.

What to remember:

  • Bruno Le Maire has just been appointed advisor to the Dutch group ASML
  • It is a giant in electronic chips
  • The former minister will have to respect certain conditions imposed by the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life
  • He joins the Frenchman Christophe Fouquet who has been running this company since last April
