WhatsApp opens up to third-party applications in Europe!

Like many other applications, WhatsApp messaging (from Meta) is obviously affected by the DMA. Also, via a future update, the application should make it possible to activate an interoperability option, called “Third-Party Chats ”. Remember that new European Union rules require the messaging services concerned to become interoperable with other applications.

Instagram, Messenger, Telegram or even Signal among the compatible applications ?

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) which applies in Europe this week will cause various changes to various web and tech giants. At Meta, among the new features to come, we will find in particular a completely new opening to competition on the side of…. WhatsApp.

This is indeed what the WABetaInfo team recently spotted, by dissecting the latest Android beta of the application. A feature called “Third-Party Chats” which will therefore allow messages to be exchanged with other third-party applications, provided of course that the latter are supported.

This should obviously concern Messenger and Instagram (which are also an integral part of Meta), but some also mention compatibility with Telegram or even Signal.

On this subject, having always highlighted the “secure” side of its messaging, WhatsApp warns users that third-party applications may have differences in privacy. “ Spam and scams may be more common on third-party email apps ” warns WhatsApp.

Currently, this feature is only available on Android (in beta), but an iOS version is also in preparation. It remains to be seen when this opening of WhatsApp will be operational for users in Europe.

Note that only European users should be entitled to this interoperability function initially, the objective being mainly to comply with the DMA. There is no doubt that if the experience proves positive, the rest of the world could also benefit from this interoperability.
