Whitney Houston has never been forgotten. It was in 2012, at the age of 48, that she died of an overdose after many years of a huge career. At her side was David Roberts, her bodyguard. Now aged 73 years old, it is in the columns of the Daily Mail that he agreed to make some confidences. Between 1988 and 1995, he was at the service of Whitney Houston, ensuring that everything went smoothly. He notably revealed that he had already thought about giving up everything.

David Roberts was very attached to the singer and he had already imagined the possibility of sharing his life with her. “If you cross that line, you lose your objectivity and it becomes dangerous for the person you're protecting,” he first said. He then made reference to the movie The Bodyguard indicating that Frank Farmer crossed that line with Rachel Marron. “He's done in his job,” said David Roberts.

David Roberts: A Client He Was Very Attached To

Whitney Houston was more than just someone to protect for David Roberts. He notably stated that many elements of the film took place when he was the singer's bodyguard. As a reminder, he will soon unveil a book entitled Protecting Whitney in which he looks back on the years spent alongside the artist. The two were very close and, according to David Roberts, a romantic relationship with Whitney Houston could have been possible.

Whitney Houston particularly liked her bodyguard and she let him know. “She wrote me a note over 35 years ago. It was on a post-it note and she slipped it under the door of the hotel we were staying in in Hong Kong in 1988,” he recalled, before adding, “I still have it. The words are partially erased but it is still very precious to me”.  Whitney Houston's death was a tragedy for the bodyguard who never forgot it. Despite the years that have passed, he continues to keep her memory alive.

Whitney Houston: a very complicated client to protect ?

When he agreed to protect the singer, David Roberts didn't know what he was getting into. He imagined he would find himself face to a celebrity with a strong character, he said he was very surprised. “She was a very sophisticated young woman”, he said. For him, the singer's death could have been avoided. “If she had been well surrounded, there would have been so much to do to help her”, he regretted. It was in 1995 that David Roberts said goodbye to Whitney Houston, after he had expressed doubts about his drug use.
