The opponent is huge, but so are the hopes. The young start-up Constellations Technologies is part of the myriad of new companies that are driving the French space market. Based in the Paris region and in Toulouse, the young company wants to take on giants. It has one in particular in its sights: surely the biggest of them all, none other than Starlink.

While the project is crazy, excessive, and imprudent, some would say, Constellations Technologies nevertheless seems to be finding partners and building trust with historic players in the French space scene. As proof, the company has just completed a fundraising of several million euros.

In detail, there are no less than 9.3 million euros which were collected from recognized players such as the “Expansion” fund managed by BpiFrance on behalf of the State. A historic investment for the company that wants to take advantage of this liquidity to change its status.

Constellations Technologies' project is to generalize access to the internet by satellite. If this technology is now understood by the general public, with the emergence of Starlink, it is still growing. According to a study by GSMA Intelligence, this market could bring in around 35 billion dollars in 10 years.

Faced with such a market, Constellations Technologies wants to play the role of a gateway. The company is ready to conquer space, but it will not do it on its own account, unlike Starlink for example. The idea is rather to ally with current and historical telecom operators, in order to take advantage of their very large customer base to develop quickly and at a lower cost.

A race against time

The objective now for the young company, born in 2022, is not to waste time. It wants to launch satellites into orbit as quickly as possible to test its connectivity technology (using the terrestrial 5G spectrum).

The development of a very low orbit constellation (to reduce latency as much as possible) will be implemented in a second phase. Although the project is still very theoretical, Constellations Technologies assures that it has already received several letters of intent from European telecom operators. It would be in discussions with international players according to the words of its CEO and founder Charles Delfieux.
