Samsung has just announced its intention to buy the Oxford start-up Semantic Technologies. Although its name sounds foreign, it is developing a technology that is extremely popular at a time when smartphones incorporate generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Specialist in graph technology

The two companies have already signed an acquisition agreement, the amount of which has not been disclosed. Founded in 2017 by professors affiliated with the prestigious University of Oxford, the start-up specializes in graph technology. This discipline constitutes a powerful means of representing and organizing information in the form of an interconnected network.

« Knowledge graph technology stores information as an interconnected network of related ideas and tprocesses data in a manner similar to how humans acquire, remember, recall, and reason about knowledge ,” Samsung wrote in a press release. The South Korean giant has been collaborating with Oxford Semantic Technologies since 2018.

The company's flagship product, RDFox, is a reasoning engine designed to transform data into precise answers to complex questions. “ By integrating and connecting this data, technology allows us to better understand how people use a product or service and quickly find information and recommendations ,” continues Samsung. This is an essential element for developing even more sophisticated AI capabilities.

Strengthening AI skills locally

< p>There is no doubt, this acquisition aims to strengthen Samsung's capabilities in AI. The firm has also announced that it will apply it to its smartphones, televisions and household appliances. Because the main advantage of the Oxford Semantic Technologies product lies in its ability to amplify reasoning skills locally, without resorting to the cloud . A crucial point at a time when the issue of personal data is hampering the efforts of AI giants.

This acquisition demonstrates Samsung's strategy to strengthen its competitiveness, as we enter the era of AI-powered smartphones. By incorporating Galaxy AI into its S24 range, the Korean conglomerate has seen its sales skyrocket. But it will now have to face stiff competition with the upcoming arrival of Apple Intelligence on the market. The ability to run AI locally also proved to be a major challenge for the Apple brand during the development of the technology.

« By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph technology and reasoning, we will provide Samsung customers with even more sophisticated personalization ,” assures Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies. Apple better watch out…
