For a while now, we’ve known that OpenAI is developing a successor to GPT-4, which should provide an even smarter AI. But while we expected this new model, called GPT-5, to be released this year, it didn’t arrive. This December, for 12 days, OpenAI announced a series of new features, including the ChatGPT Pro subscription, the free Canvas feature, and the ability to use the camera in advanced voice mode. On the other hand, there was no mention of GPT-5.

And thanks to a Wall Street Journal article (via TechCrunch), we may know why this long-awaited AI model still hasn’t been released. Indeed, OpenAI has reportedly encountered obstacles in the development of the successor to GPT-4. According to the new rumor, the current version of GPT-5 is not powerful enough to justify its costs, even though the AI is better.

In addition, OpenAI would also need an astronomical amount of data to train this new AI, and would no longer be able to rely on public data and data that it can exploit thanks to its licensing agreements. As a result, in order to train the future GPT-5, the creator of ChatGPT would pay people to create the data it needs. OpenAI would also use “synthetic” data that was created by its other AI models, such as o1.

Competition is getting tougher in the sector

As usual, this information should be considered with caution, since it does not come from an official source. But in any case, if ChatGPT already has very intelligent models, its creator must continue to innovate so as not to be eclipsed by the competition. Among OpenAI's competitors, there are Google and Meta, but also other very promising startups, such as Anthropic or the French laboratory Mistral.

In any case, OpenAI may need even more funding to finalize the development of GPT-5. As a reminder, even if ChatGPT already generates large revenues, its creator is not yet profitable. And this is the reason why OpenAI continues to raise funds. In October, it raised $6.6 billion, which allowed it to reach a valuation of $157 billion. Today, OpenAI is one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

  • According to a Wall Street Journal article, OpenAI is having trouble developing GPT-5, the successor to GPT-4
  • The company is still not satisfied with the results obtained, and would need more training data
  • Developing GPT-5 would also be very expensive
