Why Kraven the Hunter is the disaster it was supposed to be ?

After many years, it's finally here: one of Spider-Man's iconic enemies is getting his own feature film in theaters. The antagonist Kraven the Hunter has been a long time coming to the big screen. It was rumored that he would appear in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and then in Spider-Man: No Way Home, during the reunion of the three Spider-Men. But it didn't happen. Fans of the Russian fighter therefore had to be patient.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been developing for many years on the Disney side, Sony perseveres and tries to compete as best it can… That is to say, with frankly mixed results. In the line of Venom, Morbius and Madame Web, it is time for Kraven the Hunter to enter the scene. Poor thing. To put it simply, the movie Kraven the Hunter is the nail in Sony's coffin in the superhero universe. We didn’t need this new movie for that, but hey, now that it’s here… With Kraven the Hunter, Sony is giving us the worst possible goodbye and we can’t help but feel a little relieved.

Kraven the Hunter: an inevitable flop?

Is there a universe in which Kraven the Hunteris a hit? I doubt it. Already released in theaters in the United States, the press and the audience are not mincing their words. During its first weekend of release, the feature film is a monumental flop. To give you an idea, Kraven the Hunter had a worse start than Madame Web, which had already flopped badly when it was released in theaters.

The audience doesn't seem to be really open to the idea of a universe dedicated to characters related to good old Peter Parker, closely or loosely. But Sony took a long time to understand the idea. With Kraven the Hunter, the company is bowing out and we would have liked a “beautiful” exit. At least…

Unfortunately, Sony continues the carnage. At Presse-citron, we saw Kraven the Hunter and we can confirm it: there is nothing to be gained from it. The film tells nothing (or almost nothing), and does it badly. Everything is predictable and nothing is subtle. The characters are not endearing, the writing is heartbreaking, so much so that actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick Ass) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) can't escape unscathed. As for the visual effects, they're painful to watch. Finally, while the music isn't exactly bad, it's completely forgettable when the lights come back on. Even the fights failed to dazzle us. We would have liked to have something to hold on to, anything, but Kraven the Hunter is merciless.

There had to be a way to do something interesting with this antagonist. We would have loved to be surprised when we left the screening . But no, nothing works: Kraven the Hunterconfirms that Sony has every interest in dropping the supervillains that revolve around Spider-Man. Too bad… But we know that Sony will make up for it with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. But for that, we will have to wait another year or two. Ahhhhhh!
