Why leaving a group conversation is so hard ?

We are all in various group conversations. To stay in touch with our family, with our friends who live far away (or not so far away), with former colleagues that we don't necessarily want to lose touch with, with people we met at a yoga class… Often, group conversations are practical. But many users find themselves stuck in useless group discussions, for which they have no interest and which can quickly annoy them.

When you are in a group conversation, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the almost constant flow of messages and the banalities exchanged. According to a study by HuffPost, 34% of users say they feel trapped in these groups while 42% of people compare them to a part-time job. Except that leaving a group conversation is difficult…

When group conversations overwhelm us

The problem with group conversations is that it’s easy to lose sight of its primary purpose. While the group was created for a specific reason, it can quickly become a place for exchanging trivialities that you may not care about. When the group conversation brings together many members and it’s very active, it can quickly become boring or even unbearable. You put your smartphone down for a few hours (or even a few minutes) and when you find it again, you have 160 unread messages. What an ordeal… Especially when the topics seem useless to you.

But out of politeness, users stay in these group conversations. Because leaving a group is rarely done discreetly. On Messenger or WhatsApp, the departure of a member is highlighted by a notification and everyone sees it. You can't really leave without being noticed. And many Internet users dread this. However, we should not be afraid to leave a group that we are not interested in (or no longer).

It is possible to mute the notifications of a group conversation. Despite everything, it does not disappear and it is still very much there. And maybe, like me, you don't like seeing that you have unread messages. In addition, some people believe that leaving a group conversation is irreversible. They might as well stay in it and mute it if ever one day, they need to communicate in this conversation. But it is important to remember that after all, you don't owe anyone anything.

Especially since group conversations can easily get out of hand. When several people are gathered in the same place, physically or not, debates quickly arise. And it may be necessary to set limits and not want to put up with that.
