This is an initiative that has not escaped the American media. Meta announced on Wednesday, December 11, that it had donated one million dollars to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund. An approach that seems to confirm the rapprochement between the two men, while their relations were once extremely tense. Explanations.

“Mark Zuckerberg should be imprisoned for life”

Logically, the press wanted to know more about the official reasons for this donation, but Meta did not wish to comment on the information. We are therefore reduced to suppositions, however, as the Wall Street Journal reminds us, these gifts, which have no contribution limit, are prized by large companies in order to attract the good graces of the new government.

As for the boss and founder of Meta, this donation is part of a rather tormented relationship with Donald Trump. The one who will return to the White House on January 20 had accused the company's platforms (especially Facebook and Instagram) of censoring conservatives on their applications. The company had also decided to block his accounts before restoring them a little later.

Donald Trump had personally gotten angry with Mark Zuckerberg. He even said that the latter should be ” imprisoned for life “ for having personally plotted against him during the 2020 election.

As the 2024 election approached, the entrepreneur then got closer to the Republican candidate, as recalled by the New York Times. The two men first spoke on the phone twice. Mark Zuckerberg also indicated « that he was praying » for him after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Tech bosses reconnect with Donald Trump

Then, in a letter to Congress, he made amends and indicated that Joe Biden's government had pressured Meta to censor more content on covid, in particular. Finally, the Meta boss met Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in November.

He is not the only CEO to bow to the future president. Apple’s Tim Cook, Google’s Sundar Pichai, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos are all stepping up initiatives and reaching out to the new administration in the hope of establishing good relations with the new regime.

What to remember:

  • Meta donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund
  • This initiative is part of the rapprochement between Mark Zuckerberg and the Republican
  • Other major tech leaders are also showing their credentials
