Why You Should Wait Until 2025 to Upgrade Your PC

In 2020, Apple began replacing Intel processors with Apple Silicon chips on Macs. Based on Arm architectures, which are also used by iPhone processors, these Apple chips are more powerful and offer better energy efficiency. As a result, both in terms of power and battery life, Apple laptops have clearly stood out from the competition.

But since this year, some Windows PC manufacturers have been marketing new machines that use new processors designed by Qualcomm: the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips. These chips were created to compete with the performance and battery life of Macs. And the first laptops using these next-generation components, such as the new Surface Laptop, are already on the market.

More affordable models in 2025

But while these new PCs have big advantages over machines using Intel processors, it might be wiser to wait until 2025. Indeed, a recent statement from the boss of Qualcomm suggests that starting next year, it will be possible to buy computers with Snapdragon X chips at more affordable prices. As reported by The Verge, you currently have to pay at least $999 to buy a PC using one of Qualcomm’s new processors. In France, the base price of the new Surface Laptop is 1,199 euros.

According to The Verge, during a conference call, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon explained that in 2025, we will be entitled to new PC designs, but also computers equipped with Snapdragon X chips sold for $700 in the United States. And despite this more affordable price, there would be no sacrifice at the level of the NPU, the part that is dedicated to artificial intelligence.

Indeed, in addition to having more power and autonomy, machines that use Snapdragon X chips are also equipped with significant computing power for artificial intelligence. Moreover, these machines come with a special version of Windows 11 that Microsoft has equipped with new AI-based features.

For the moment, Qualcomm is not talking about sales

A priori, the new PCs using Snapdragon X chips should be a hit. Indeed, in addition to the fact that it offers many advantages in terms of performance and autonomy, these machines also arrive at a time when Microsoft is preparing to end support for Windows 10, which will force many individuals and companies to buy new machines.

But for the moment, we do not know how many PCs using these chips have been sold. Cristiano Amon explained, during the Qualcomm conference call, that it is still too early to talk about sales. In any case, the company is already working with PC brands to launch a new wave of devices. Qualcomm's CEO also indicated that many announcements will be made at IFA in Berlin, a major tech trade show that will take place in September.

  • Windows PCs are catching up to Macs in terms of performance thanks to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X chips
  • And the good news is that more affordable machines using these chips will be available in 2025
  • Qualcomm has also specified that there will be no concessions when it comes to artificial intelligence performance
  • Qualcomm is not yet discussing the figures for PC sales using its new components, but confirms that a new wave of products is already in the pipeline
