Why You'll (Finally) Love Scanning Documents with Google Drive

Like millions of users, you may be using the Google Drive solution to store your photos, but also all types of documents. But did you know that this same Google Drive allows you to scan many documents very easily (and in a handful of seconds)? Today, this same scanner function offers a new and rather welcome feature. Let's remember that for a few months now, Google has been boosting its applications with in-house artificial intelligence, and this is particularly the case for the Drive storage solution.

Google Drive scanning opens in JPEG format

To easily save a photo, text or any other document to your Google Drive space, you can use the Scanner function, via the “+” symbol at the bottom right of the screen. But if this scanning was previously reserved for PDF format, it is now possible to save your documents in good old JPEG format. A lighter format on the one hand, but also more practical for sharing with interlocutors.

Currently, users can scan files to PDF with their Android mobile device using the Google Drive app. This week, we are pleased to announce that users can now choose to save scanned files as PDF or JPEG files” Google explains on its official website.

So of course, some will say that it is also quite possible to simply take a photo of a document, in order to 'save directly to JPEG. However, Google Drive's built-in scanner offers a few extra handy tools, starting with automatic alignment and cropping, not to mention the ability to improve the readability of text.

The update is currently rolling out, and should affect all Google Workspace customers, individual Workspace subscribers, as well as users of personal Google accounts.

Please note, however, that this new JPEG feature is only available on Android devices. If you use an iPhone, you are still forced to use the DPF format if you use the Google Drive scanner.
