The technology that powers the wifi of our devices is constantly evolving and after wifi 6 and wifi 6E, the new wifi 7 standard is arriving. In truth, some brands have already released WiFi 7 devices in 2023. But now, the Wifi Alliance, which manages the standards, offers official certification, which will make it easy to recognize compatible devices.
Like every new standard, wifi 7 brings a certain number of improvements compared to the previous version. In its official announcement of this certification, the alliance mentions higher throughput, improved latency, better efficiency, more reliability, and reduced energy consumption. Qualcomm, whose FastConnect 7800 Mobile Connectivity System and Networking Pro Wi-Fi 7 platforms were used to test Wifi 7, provides more details.
According to this Here, Wifi 7 better exploits the 6 GHz spectrum, which allows peak speeds of up to 40 Gbps, which is 4 times higher compared to Wifi 6E. “Wi-Fi 7 introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO), a revolutionary feature that dramatically increases throughput and maintains consistent low latency, even in highly congested environments”, also indicates Qualcomm.
In addition, Wifi 7 also has been designed for virtual reality and augmented reality products, which have higher data consumption. As for gamers, they should benefit from a better gaming experience thanks to better bandwidth, but also to reduced latency.
In 2022, the Mediatek company even compared the performance of Wifi 7 to that of a wired connection via Ethernet, after demonstrating the technology.
“The deployment of Wi-Fi 7 will mark the first time that Wi-Fi can be a true wired/Ethernet replacement for very high-speed applications”, a Mediatek official said. “MediaTek's Wi-Fi 7 technology will form the backbone of home, office and industrial networks and provide seamless connectivity for everything from multiplayer AR/VR applications to gaming in the cloud and 4K calls to 8K streaming and beyond.”
In any case, now that wifi 7 certification is available, the number of compatible devices will multiply. The Wifi Alliance predicts that in 2024 alone, 233 million Wifi 7 certified devices will hit the market. And by 2028, there will be 2.1 billion.
As a reminder, to benefit from this new standard, you must not only have a Wifi 7 certified device (smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.), the router must also be Wifi 7 certified.
