Windows 10 will disappear in a year: what is the market share of its successor ?

© Presse-citron

Launched in July 2015, Windows 10 will be retiring in a year. Indeed, Microsoft plans to end software support for this operating system on October 14, except for businesses that pay for an extension. For a large part of the general public, it will no longer be safe to use Windows 10 after this date, since the OS will no longer receive security updates. But with a year to go before the end of support for Windows 10, even if its market share is slightly down, it still has significantly more users than Windows 11.

62.79% of Windows PCs are running Windows 10

According to new data from Statcounter, in September, Windows 10 had a market share of 62.79% on Windows machines, while Windows 11’s market share was 33.37%. There is still a slight improvement, since in August, Windows 11 had a share of 31.63% and Windows 10 had a share of 64.14%. As a reminder, Windows 11 has been available since 2021, but its adoption has been very slow due to Microsoft’s hardware requirements. In particular, for a PC to be compatible with Windows 11, it must have a module called TPM 2.0, which a good portion of computers currently running Windows 10 do not have.

What solutions ?

For those currently using a Windows 10 PC that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11, there are only two solutions. The first is to buy a new machine that comes with Windows 11. And the second is to replace Windows with another operating system that will continue to receive security updates after October 14. Of course, there is Linux, which is free and open source. But it will also be possible to replace Windows with Chrome OS Flex, an ultra-light, cloud-based operating system offered by Google.

  • Microsoft plans to stop providing updates (with exceptions) for Windows 10 starting October 14, 2025
  • Yet, to date, 62.79% of Windows PCs are still running Windows 10
  • The rollout of Windows 11 is slow, as many machines currently running Windows 10 are incompatible with the new OS
  • After October 14, many users will have to buy a new PC compatible with Windows 11, or replace Windows 10 with an alternative like Chrome OS Flex
