With this major breakthrough, Xiaomi could boast of being like Apple

Typically, smartphone manufacturers must use an operating system offered by another company, as well as a processor designed and manufactured by a supplier, such as Qualcomm or Mediatek. But there are a few exceptions, such as Apple and Google. As a reminder, Apple uses its proprietary operating system, and designs the iPhone processors itself. As for Google, it is the supplier of the Android operating system and for a few years now, its Pixel smartphones have used Tensor chips developed in-house. And Xiaomi clearly wants to have the same level of control over its products. Indeed, the manufacturer already uses an operating system called HyperOS, which is partly based on its Vela platform, but without completely detaching itself from the Android ecosystem. And at the same time, the manufacturer would develop chips designed internally for its smartphones.

Smartphones with a Xiaomi processor ?

In June, the analysis firm Trendforce published an article indicating that the companies Unisoc and Xiaomi had succeeded in manufacturing chips engraved in 4 nm. And now, this is becoming clearer. A few days ago, many tech news sites relayed the publication of a source on the social network X (Yogesh Brar) who explains that the development of the Xiaomi chip would be well underway. This would be based on TSMC's N4P technology and would have performances comparable to those of the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 processor that equipped a good part of the high-end models under Android in 2022. The launch of this Xiaomi chip, which would use Unisoc's 5G modems, could arrive in 2025.

In essence, Xiaomi's first chip would not have the performance of a high-end processor from 2025. But it could well be suitable for mid-range smartphones. And besides, if Xiaomi manages to develop a 4nm processor itself capable of competing with the Snapdragon 8 gen 1, it would already be an achievement. But for the moment, since this information is not official, caution is still advised.

More control and more independence

In any case, Xiaomi has never hidden its ambitions. In 2017, the manufacturer had already unveiled an affordable smartphone chip called Surge S1, which equipped its Xiaomi Mi 5c smartphone. Otherwise, Xiaomi has also developed other components internally for its smartphones. The Xiaomi Mix Flip smartphone, for example, uses internally developed components to optimize charging and battery life, as well as the network.

Like Google or Apple, Xiaomi would have the possibility of optimizing the hardware of its products for the functionalities it offers, by developing its own chips. But beyond that, Xiaomi would also be less dependent on its current suppliers.
