With this update, the PlayStation Portal becomes (almost) indispensable

It was a year ago that Sony released its much-maligned PS Portal. A remote play device, inseparable from a PS5 console, which allows you to play games installed on the home console remotely, directly on its 1080p LCD screen. While the excellent ergonomics of the PS Portal are indisputable, its very limited features tend to make players grimace. No cloud gaming, no applications available… But a recent update deployed by Sony will rekindle interest in the PS Portal, and many recalcitrants will consider purchasing it.

An update as unexpected as it is essential for the PS Portal

Indeed, since its launch, the PS Portal has clearly been the ideal companion for anyone who can't always access the living room TV to enjoy their PS5. We are thinking in particular of parents who, for various reasons (no screen at home, children watching their favourite cartoon, game too violent, etc.), can continue their game of Astro Bot, God of War or Elden Ring in complete peace on their PS Portal.

As mentioned above, the PS Portal does not allow any other use than to stream games installed on the paired PS5. However, with a recent update (currently rolling out), Sony is changing the game. Indeed, the latter allows to “evolve” the PS Portal, by giving it a new, much-requested feature: support for cloud streaming.

Concretely, PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers (and only them) will be able to test the new beta version of cloud streaming on the PS Portal. In other words, they will be able to stream just over a hundred PS5 games directly from Sony's servers, even if they don't have a PS5 console.

So, from this day on (and provided you are a PlayStation Plus Premium subscriber), the PS Portal becomes independent, and therefore allows you to play PS5 games, without having to be paired to a PS5.

Sony says being in the early stages of cloud streaming on PS Portal“. Also, at present, the Streaming games playable on PS Portal will be exclusively PS5 games. PS4/PS3 games are not supported. This is probably enough to revive interest in the PS Portal among players who considered the device too limited in features.

An audio problem also corrected by the update up to date

And that's not all! Indeed, the recent update also corrects some shortcomings of the device, and in particular a problem related to the adjustment of the minimum audio output. Indeed, if you are the happy owner of a PS Portal, you have probably noticed that the minimum audio volume is too high, a defect that manifests itself in particular during night sessions, when the household is asleep.

With the new firmware version, the volume is now lower when the audio level is set to minimum. The settings have also benefited from an update, allowing the overall volume and the volume of the local effect to be optimized.

This is enough to revive interest in this PS Portal just before the end-of-year holidays, while allowing Sony to test the cloud gaming and digital terrain a little more, especially after a PS5 Pro (also much criticized) which opted for “all dematerial” at its launch.
