Without warning, the 6:55 a.m. train from Alès to Génolhac disappears!

Si, malgré un trajet plus long, les bus font leur office, leur impact sur le réseau routier interroge. Midi Libre – ALEXIS BETHUNE

Due to the low number of users, its replacement by a bus, financed by the Occitanie region, is causing users and defenders of public services in the Hautes Cévennes to grind their teeth.

It is, or rather it was, the perfect regional express train for Luc, who lives in Alès and works in Génolhac. Usually leaving at 6:55 a.m. from the capital of the Cévennes for an arrival at 7:35 a.m. in the city of the late Camisard Nicolas Joany, the neo-Cévenol discovered, on December 15, that his train had been cancelled… Thus, without warning, the 6:55 a.m. TER disappeared and a bus was then made available by the Occitanie region. An essential service in order to serve users of Cézarenque (a medical-social establishment, editor’s note) as well as Luc, who works in a Génolhacoise institution. “ But we discovered this one fine morning while consulting the site, without any other explanation… sighs Luc's partner, in solidarity. And then it's not the same thing. The comfort of the train is not that of a bus and it takes an hour to make the journey (instead of 40 minutes by train, Editor's note).”

The Cévenol line is not in danger!

A development detailed by Jean-Luc Gibelin, vice-president (PCF) for transport in the Occitanie Region. “ The reorganization of the offer is linked to the change in the schedule of a train from Mende to Montpellier which left too early (4:45 a.m., Editor's note). This situation was discussed with the residents of Cézarenque and transport was set up after discussion with Alès agglomeration. There was a very limited number of people, to put it mildly, and we have to look at the organisation as a whole. But it is a line that we finance 100% and the Cévenol line is not in danger! “

We are struggling to find funding to renovate our bridges, the Cévennes episodes are multiplying and these repeated bus passages are damaging the roads

The disappearance of the Cévenol ? A fear that has greatly mobilized the members of the Committee for the Defense of Public Services and Users in the Hautes Cévennes who are now critical, for economic and ecological reasons, of this suppression.“Beyond the fact that no one is informed and that the announcement falls abruptly, this raises the question of the deterioration of road infrastructure, details André Joffart. We are struggling to find funding to renovate our bridges, the Cévennes episodes are multiplying and these repeated bus passages are degrading the roads and will put the Department's finances in difficulty! And then the most ecological form of transport remains rail.”
“A train is ecological as long as there are a minimum number of people inside”
specifies Jean-Luc Gibelin.
A question whose answer will appear over time…

Supported by the Committee for the Defense of Public Services and Users in the Hautes Cévennes, the holding of a stand on January 4 at the Génolhac market, a month of mobilization, called “January 2025, Month of Public Services in the Hautes Cévennes”, in order to defend this common good.
