Woman charged with fraud for faking cancer to raise money

A Moose Jaw, Sask., woman is facing 53 counts of fraud for allegedly leading a fundraiser to believe she had cancer.

In the span of two months, the 28-year-old woman defrauded businesses and individuals of nearly $16,000, according to the Moose Police Department Jaw.

The accused's first appearance is scheduled for December 11 in Moose Jaw provincial court.

An expired GoFundMe fundraiser post , but linked to Facebook pages in the woman's name indicated that she had been diagnosed with cancer. It was a spinal tumor that had spread to the head, throat, lungs and kidneys.

This fundraiser raised $1,450.

The Moose Jaw Police Service says the people who helped the woman collecting money were not complicit in the offences.

Police say they are in the process of contacting the victims. She asks people who believe they have been defrauded by the accused, but who have not yet been contacted, to call 306 694-7600.
