“Would you give a cigarette to a child ?” A commission of inquiry targets TikTok in France

The Chinese social network TikTok has been making headlines for a few years now. Often, it's the challenges that are sometimes dangerous, sometimes stupid (and often both) that are at the heart of the debates, but the network is also in trouble in many countries, particularly in the United States. Recently, it was Meta who offered no less than $50,000/month to some creators to leave TikTok in favor of Instagram. A few hours before Donald Trump's inauguration, this same TikTok had even been taken out of service in the United States, before signing its comeback, helped in this by the new president of the United States.

Towards a cross-party commission of inquiry for TikTok ?

Also, many countries are warning users about the various dangers of TikTok, for political reasons of course, but also (and mainly) for the “addictive” side of the platform, and its ability to damage the brains of young users. In France, the network is (very) active, but also in the crosshairs of many politicians. This is particularly the case for the deputy of the presidential majority Laure Miller, who warns about the “extremely addictive side” from TikTok.

Would you give a child a cigarette ? Parents often underestimate what lies behind their teens' TikTok accounts: addictions, bullying, anxiety, attention deficit disorder…” explains Laure Miller on the X network.

Thus, Laure Miller wants a transpartisan commission concerning TikTok, which should help to highlight the harmful consequences of the network. For a long time now, the TikTok network has been accused of putting “mind-blowing videos in front of the eyes of the youngest” on the one hand, but also content related to pornography, suicide, violence, harassment…

We will have to wait a few more days before knowing whether the creation of a commission dedicated to this thorny subject can officially be put in place. For Laure Miller, it is more than ever about being able to “control what we put in the hands of our children“, with a subject that concerns all parents, and which politicians, regardless of their orientations, must take hold of.
