You Might Wait Until 2026 to Buy a New MacBook: Why

While Apple has just presented the iPhone 16 series, rumors are already circulating about another event that the Cupertino company would organize in October. After the new iPhones, the company would present new iPad models, a Mac mini with a completely new design, and new MacBooks. The main new feature of the next generation of Macs should be the M4 chip, more powerful and better adapted to new features based on artificial intelligence.

Unfortunately, if you’re (still) waiting for the first Macs with OLED displays, you’ll have to be more patient. At least, that’s what two highly regarded analysts are suggesting: Ming Chi Kuo and Ross Young. In a recent discussion on the social network X, Ming Chi Kuo revised one of his predictions about the arrival of OLED technology in MacBooks. While he had at one point mentioned the possibility of a MacBook Pro with an OLED display arriving in 2025, he now believes that, as Ross Young indicated, the 2025 MacBook Pros will still use Mini LED displays. For his part, Ross Young confirmed his previous predictions on the subject.

While OLED technology is already used by the iPhone and some iPad models, Apple will not offer this technology on MacBook Pros until 2026 at the earliest.

OLED screens are becoming the norm ?

As a reminder, the OLED screen allows for better image quality, with better contrasts. This can also reduce the screen's energy consumption when dark mode is used. Furthermore, while OLED has been present on high-end smartphones for years, the technology is also gradually arriving on PCs. Indeed, many brands already offer laptops with OLED screens instead of the traditional LCD.

This is the case of the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra, or the Asus Vivobook S 15 Snapdragon that we recently tested. The latter, in addition to having an OLED screen, uses the Snapdragon X Elite chip. Thanks to the Arm architecture and Qualcomm's Oryon processor core, this chip is able to compete with Apple Silicon chips in terms of performance and energy efficiency.

  • Apple has just unveiled the iPhone 16 and is expected to hold another event in October to unveil new Macs
  • The next generation of Apple computers should benefit from the new M4 chip, but it would not yet exploit OLED screens
  • Two analysts, Ming Chi Kuo and Ross Young, agree that in 2025, Apple will continue to offer MacBook Pros with Mini LED screens
  • However, more and more competing brands are offering laptops with OLED screens which, in addition to providing better image quality, can extend battery life
