Your Next PC Might Use an Nvidia Processor: Here's What We Know, So Far

Your next PC may not use an Intel processor or even a Qualcomm chip, but a CPU designed by Nvidia. Known for its graphics cards and chips dedicated to artificial intelligence, this company, which is one of the most valuable in the world, now has its sights set on the market for processors for personal computers. Rumors have been circulating about this project for a while. And recently, Nvidia's plans have become clearer.

In an article published this week, Reuters reports that, during a Q&A session for investors, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang indicated that the company does indeed have plans for CPUs. However, he is not saying more, for the moment.

A CPU developed with Mediatek

As a reminder, Nvidia took advantage of the CES in Las Vegas to present the DIGITS project, a compact personal supercomputer dedicated to AI. And while this computer is aimed at developers, but not the general public, its CPU has still attracted attention. It is an Arm chip that Nvidia developed with the Taiwanese company Mediatek, best known for its smartphone processors.

According to Reuters, during the question-and-answer session, the Nvidia boss mentioned a win-win partnership with Mediatek. He also indicated that this CPU co-developed by the two companies could arrive on other products.

A new era for the PC market ?

For the moment, Nvidia's plans are therefore unclear. But, in any case, the arrival of this new competitor on the market of processors for personal computers would make Intel's situation even more complicated. As a reminder, in 2020, Apple abandoned Intel processors to equip its Macs with Apple Silicon chips, based on Arm architectures. Later, Qualcomm developed the Snapdragon X series chips which are also based on Arm technologies, and which rival the performance and energy efficiency of Macs. Moreover, Qualcomm took advantage of the CES in Las Vegas to unveil a new chip from this series that will equip mid-range PCs.
