In recent years, Samsung’s photo division has been engaged in a megapixel race. In 2019, it presented the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor, the first image sensor for smartphones with a resolution of 108 megapixels. And today, it also offers a 200 megapixel sensor, which can be found on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and on some models from other brands.

But Samsung could go even further, by developing a 500 megapixel sensor for smartphones. In any case, this is what a recent publication on X by Jukanlosreve, a source that is regularly cited by the media, indicates. According to this, Samsung is reportedly developing a brand new sensor that could equip the iPhone, and which would rival Sony's sensors, while developing a 500-megapixel sensor for Galaxy smartphones.

What's the point ?

For now, caution is advised, since this information does not come from an official source. But in any case, it would be logical for Samsung to seek to increase the resolution of photo sensors for smartphones. As a reminder, this type of sensor allows you to capture ultra-detailed images when the light is good. And in low-light environments, it can capture more light thanks to a technology called pixel-binning which consists of combining adjacent pixels to have more light.

Furthermore, if Samsung develops a 500-megapixel sensor, it will probably not be reserved for Galaxy smartphones. Indeed, in addition to being a smartphone manufacturer, Samsung is also a supplier of components (screens, photo sensors, etc.)

  • After the 108 megapixel sensors and the 200 megapixel sensors, will Samsung release a 500 megapixel sensor for smartphones ?
  • According to a source on X, this technology is in development and could land on future Galaxy smartphones
  • Sensors with a high number of megapixels allow the use of a technique called pixel-binning that can improve the quality of photos taken in dark environments
  • Samsung is also developing a new sensor for the iPhone
