“You're free to move on to the New Year!”: Drunk cop arrested for allowing suspects in custody to leave

Visiblement ivre, l’homme a laissé sortir une dizaine de personnes qui avait été arrêtée et placées en garde à vue le soir du 31 décembre. Depuis, tous sont toujours en fuite.

Titus Phiri, a Zambian inspector, was completely drunk and allowed a dozen criminals to escape from the police services. The scene took place in Zambia, a country in southern Africa, in the capital, Lusaka.

The Zambian National Police has issued a statement announcing that Inspector Titus Phiri has helped free 15 suspects and 13 have escaped. Two of them did not escape.

He allegedly “seized the cell keys by force”

“Intoxicated”, Titus Phiri allegedly “forcibly seized the cell keys” to his colleague before “asking the suspects to leave”. He then tells them that they are “free to move on to the new year”. A totally surreal scene but which thus allowed 13 people, arrested for theft or assault, to escape as free as a bird.

The policeman had also fled but was found and arrested. As for the suspects, none have been found yet and the Zambian police are increasing their searches to try, once again, to arrest them. “The police services have intensified their efforts to locate and apprehend the escapees”, the police explained in the press release.
