2025 will definitely be a year of change for Facebook. In early January, Mark Zuckerberg announced the end of fact-checking on the social network in the United States, in favor of a moderation system directly inspired by X. But that's not all, since Meta's CEO now has another priority: ensuring that the social network returns to its roots.

Back to OG Facebook ?

During Meta’s quarterly earnings call, Zuckerberg made a comment that did not escape the attention of the press. After pointing out that Facebook is used by more than 3 billion monthly active users, he suggested a return to some aspects of the original version of Facebook (“OG Facebook”).

When asked about this by an analyst, Mark Zuckerberg did not provide further details on the changes that could be made. But he did mention his desire to give Facebook a greater cultural influence than the app has today. The CEO also indicated that some of the changes that will be announced later “will go back to the way Facebook was originally used.” He also warned investors that this new direction could include compromises that are detrimental to short-term business interests.

What is Facebook up to ?

In the absence of details, many hypotheses about the changes that Facebook could make are circulating on the web. Some journalists think that Facebook could once again emphasize relationships with friends, like the old version.

But our colleagues at TechCrunch suggest that it could mainly be a new strategy to conquer young users of generation Z. Surprisingly, old features can appeal to younger users. When Poke became popular again in 2024, this feature was also popular among young people aged 19 to 29.

In any case, there will be changes. And we should know more in a few months.

  • During Meta’s quarterly earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg announced a return to some aspects of the old Facebook
  • He didn’t give details, but mentioned his desire to increase the platform’s cultural influence
  • It could also be a new strategy to attract younger users
