A bus accident between Montreal and New York leaves one dead

One person died and 11 others were injured Friday afternoon when a bus traveling between between Montreal and New York overturned on Highway 87, between Lake George and Warrensburg.

The accident occurred at 12:43 p.m. on the Adirondack Northway, or Highway 87, according to New York State Police.

According to initial reports, the FlixBus coach was heading south from Montreal and was carrying 23 people, including the driver.

Police sources told NewsChannel 13 that one person had died. State police said one person was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Ten other people suffered minor injuries.

County Administrator John Taflan said the bus was carrying mostly Canadians and a few Swiss citizens who were going to fly home.

All southbound lanes of the Adirondack Northway between exits 22 and 23 in Lake George are closed, according to the road traffic site 511.

Several fire departments responded to the scene.

Governor Kathy Hochul said state police and the Department of Transportation immediately responded.

I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of everyone involved in this horrific incident and I am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders, Ms. Hochul said in a statement earlier.

The American Red Cross responded to the accident site to help passengers find temporary shelter if necessary.

The Warrensburg Fire Department and Warren County Veterans Services will provide transportation to the shelters.

State police are investigating.
