While the smartphone market is still struggling to recover, shipments of folding smartphones are showing double-digit growth. According to a recent publication from the company DSCC, in the last quarter of 2023, shipments of folding smartphones increased by 33% year-on-year.

And despite lower than expected sales, Samsung is still the leader in this market. However, the situation would be different this first 2024 and in the second quarter. According to DSCC forecasts, Huawei should indeed overtake Samsung in the folding smartphone market for the first time during the first six months of the year.

In China, Huawei is making a real comeback, having found a way to offer 5G smartphones despite American sanctions. According to DSCC, the Chinese manufacturer would exceed shipments of Samsung folding smartphones thanks to its Mate folding smartphones by 105% in the first quarter. Furthermore, as a supplier of foldable screens for smartphones, Samsung Display would be overtaken by one of its rivals, BOE, in the last quarter of 2023, thanks to orders from Huawei.

Will take his place again, despite everything

On the other hand, DSCC predicts that Samsung should regain its leadership position in the second half, and should remain number 1 in the folding smartphone market for the whole of 2024. But in any case, these forecasts show that Samsung does not is no longer in a monopoly situation on this market.

Moreover, DSCC indicates that in the first quarter, 25 different models will be shipped. And for the whole of 2024, there would be 27 models. The company also indicates that the clamshell format should increase its share of shipments of folding smartphones this year.

Foldable clamshell smartphones, like the Galaxy Z Flip5, are very popular, thanks to their more affordable prices and their compact sizes. Furthermore, certain Chinese brands are starting to engage in price wars in this segment. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the ZTE brand, for example, unveiled the Nubia Flip 5G, a competitor to the Galaxy Z Flip5 which it will market at $599.

  • Samsung is no longer the undisputed leader in folding smartphones
  • This was still number 1 in the last quarter of 2023, but DSCC indicates that it will be overtaken by Huawei in the first quarter of 2024
  • The Korean giant will nevertheless regain this first place in the second half and will still be number 1 overall of the year 2024
