(Archive photo) The Superior Court approves a settlement reached between the congregation of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel and victims of sexual assault, between 1940 and today. The congregation has been targeted since December 2020 by a class action brought by the Montreal law firm Arsenault Dufresne Wee. For one of the lawyers on file, Me Justin Wee, it is important that victims come forward in order to obtain the compensation they deserve. In the judgment which approves this settlement agreement, Judge [Sylvain] Lussier took care to select excerpts from messages that he received. I think it's important to point this out because these messages sum up how sexual assault can ruin a life, says Me Wee. The congregation of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel has in the past administered several establishments in Quebec, including the Saint-Gabriel school in Ville-Marie, in Témiscamingue. The settlement amount will vary depending on the number of victims. It is expected to be between $9.4 million and nearly $26.9 million. Wee says about 80 plaintiffs have filed registered, although the firm believes there are more. We have predicted a certain number and, according to our estimates, we do not think that it would exceed more than 160 [victims], he indicates. Victims can register for the class action by contacting the Arsenault Dufresne Wee firm. They have three months to come forward.
