The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) won the federal by-election held Monday in Ontario in the riding of Durham, located east of Toronto.

Conservative candidate Jamil Jivani, a lawyer and commentator, received 57.4% of the vote, Elections Canada reports. Liberal Party (LPC) candidate Robert Rock received the second most votes, and NDP candidate Chris Borgia placed third.

Mr. Jivani celebrated his victory by thanking his allies and attacking his rivals from what he called the “liberal elite” who he said are making life harder and more costly for the working class.

Although Durham is a Conservative stronghold, this is one of the largest margins of victory the party has achieved in the riding in the past 20 years.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation last year of MP and former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole.

Jamil Jivani's success comes as the Conservative Party continues to advance in polls of Canadians' voting intentions ahead of the ruling Liberal Party.

In his victory speech, Jamil Jivani announced that it is his party that will best represent the values of the communities during the next federal elections, which must take place by the fall of 2025. Under under the leadership of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, the party will bring change to this country, he assured.

Pierre Poilievre highlighted the victory on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, by congratulating Jamil Jivani.
