Fire in Pointe-aux-Trembles: two dead and one injured

A 58-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman died and a third person is hospitalized in critical condition following a fire which broke out in an apartment on boulevard Saint-Jean-Baptiste, near the intersection of rue de la Gauchetière, in the Pointe district -aux-Trembles, in the east of Montreal.

When they arrived at the scene of the tragedy, firefighters quickly put out the flames which had started in an apartment on the second floor of the building, owned by the Municipal Housing Office.

In the apartment, firefighters discovered three unconscious people, including one in a state of cardiorespiratory distress. The injured were taken to hospital in critical condition. One of them, a 58-year-old man, was pronounced dead shortly after.

Later, a 35-year-old woman died from her injuries, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) confirmed in an update early this afternoon. The third person remains in critical condition in hospital.

According to Francis Fleury, head of the fire prevention section at the City of Montreal, the firefighters were able to contain the flames in the affected apartment by quickly controlling the blaze, which however generated a lot of smoke.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. An investigation is underway.

Many tenants of the building had to be evacuated. We do not know when they will be able to return to their homes.

The Montreal Fire Department reiterates the importance of equip yourself with a working smoke detector and change the batteries regularly.
