A former Saskatchewan Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, Bernie Herman, has been convicted of manslaughter. He was accused of fatally shooting his lover, Braden Herman.

Last December, Bernie Herman had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of the 26-year-old man.

The naked body of Braden Herman was found in May 2021 in a secluded area of Little Red River Park, in the outskirts of Prince Albert.

The two men, who are not related, met on Facebook in 2018. Soon after, Braden Herman moved into the police officer's family home.

This relationship caused tension between Bernie Herman and his wife. The latter was forced to ask Braden Herman to leave the house in 2019, but the sexual relations between the two men continued.

During his trial, the accused, Bernie Herman indicated that the sexual relations between him and the victim were not not always consensual. He added that he was afraid the young man would become violent.

Bernie Herman reported that Braden Herman grabbed him by the face.

The young man, who was naked at the time, then walked towards the back seat and leaned down to grab something.

Bernie Herman says he doesn't remember what happened next, but his gun went off.

Defense attorneys said the shooting was not planned and that' it had been done by chance.

In Canada, a sentence of first degree murder is imposed when evidence shows that the accused intentionally caused the death of the victim. This sentence carries life imprisonment, with no possibility of applying for parole for 25 years.

Prosecutors believe that Bernie Herman intentionally brought his service weapon with him on the outing and lured Braden Herman to a secluded area with the promise that they would have sex.

The former police officer also sent a text message to his wife which said: Your life has just changed . I shot him and he died.

According to prosecutors, this demonstrates that Bernie Herman had the&# x27;intention to kill the young man.
