Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra on the sidelines of an Unpacked event during which the manufacturer also unveiled the Galaxy Tab S8 tablet. The trio was initially supposed to be presented during the month of January 2022, but Samsung would have ultimately preferred to use the slot to launch a Galaxy S21 FE which was also highly anticipated.

After making the S21 Ultra compatible with the S-Pen, and discounting the Note range, Samsung is making the most expensive S22 Ultra this year the worthy heir to the Galaxy Note with integrated stylus. Here's everything you need to know about Samsung's high-end smartphones.

To extend this video, we invite you to discover many more details in our take in written handwriting.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra on Wednesday February 9, 2022. The three smartphones are available for pre-order now. However, you will have to be a little patient before you can get your hands on these devices. The dates of the first deliveries/in-store availability are as follows:

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: from February 25, 2022
  • Galaxy S22/S22+ : from March 11, 2022

Samsung must indeed deal with the global shortage of components, in a generation for which the manufacturer has integrated its brand new chip designed in-house, Exynos 2200. During the pre-order period, you will be entitled to a free pair of Galaxy Buds Pro + a trade-in bonus of up to €100 or €150 depending on the variants.

Samsung had made efforts to lower the selling price of the Galaxy S21, S21+ and Ultra compared to the S20. The latter were in fact available in a 4G version from 909 euros (S20), 1009 euros (S20+) and 1359 euros (S20 Ultra 5G). The 5G variants of the S20 and S20+ were more expensive, costing 1009 euros for the S20 and 1109 euros for the S20+.

With the S21, Samsung has lowered its prices a bit. However, this year Samsung was a little constrained like everyone else by the shortage of chips worldwide, especially since the manufacturer decided to launch a new Exynos 2200 chip for this generation. expect significantly rising prices. And yet… :

  • Galaxy S22 8/128: €859
  • Galaxy S22 8/256: €909
  • Galaxy S22+ 8/128: €1,059
  • Galaxy S22+ 8/256 : €1,109
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra 8/128: €1,259
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra 12/256 : €1,359
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra 12/512: €1,459
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra 12/1000: €1,659

The prices are therefore exactly the same as the previous generation. With the exception of the S22 Ultra 1 TB variant which will remain exclusive to the Samsung.com site. Judge for yourself:

  • Galaxy S21 128 GB: €859
  • Galaxy S21 256 GB: €909
  • Galaxy S21+ 128 GB ;: €1,059
  • Galaxy S21+ 256 GB: €1,109
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra 128 GB: €1,259
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra 256 GB: €1,309
  • Galaxy S21 Ultra 512 GB: €1,439

Several data from the technical sheet of the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra have been in little doubt for some time. The three smartphones feature a 2X AMOLED screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate… the screen is slightly brighter on the Ultra model. Ultra models can deliver a constant brightness of 1300 nits and up to 1750 nits peak.

All S22 screens also cover 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, the same as that used by image professionals, for exceptional color rendering. They are protected by a new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus glass which resists drops of more than 2 meters. The S22s feature the new Exynos 2200 chip in France.

The Exynos 2200 (4 nm) variants are expected to be better than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 variants (also engraved in 4 nm) sold in the United States. Samsung's new chip is the first to offer a real AMD GPU on the die with mRDNA 2 architecture to enhance the gaming experience, including Ray Tracing effects in games that support it.

For the rest of the technical sheet, Samsung uses the fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen and the UWB chip introduced on the previous generation and which allows more precise localization of the Samsung SmartTags. All variants will be compatible with WiFi 6 technology and WiFi 6E technology for the more expensive models. Samsung is launching these smartphones directly under Android 12 with the OneUI 4 overlay. All Samsung Galaxy S22s obtained a repairability index of 8.2/10 which is excellent.

It can be difficult to navigate between these three models, or even to determine precisely whether this generation or a previous generation is best for you. This is why we invite you to analyze in detail the differences between the devices in the range and other smartphones in a series of comparisons:

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra vs S21 Ultra – what are the differences?
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs S22 vs S22+ – which one to choose?

Of course, it is impossible to give you the exact performance of the Galaxy S22 range at this stage. But we can, thanks to several indiscretions, give you an overview. The first info is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 benchmark that appeared in the Geekbench database. In this preliminary benchmark, the chip reached 1211 in single core and 3193 in multi core.

To give you a point of comparison, according to the S21+ benchmarks in the Geekbench 5 database, the Snapdragon 888 was capable of delivering 965 in single core and 3058 in multi core (figures from S21+ 5G). The same model obtains 6990 in the OpenCL benchmark and 5973 in the Vulkan graphics test.

A first benchmark of the Exynos 2200 chip suggests performance up 17% compared to the Exynos 2200 chip and +10% sustained performance. At peak the difference would reach between 31 and 34%. And the performance difference compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 would be dramatic in the 3D Mark Wild Life test.

It remains to be seen how this chip compares to the Apple A15 chips in the latest iPhone 13. The latest Apple smartphone in fact achieves scores of 1738 in single core and 4819 in multi-core in the Geekbench 5.1 test.

The battery life of the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra is pretty good this year. It must be said that we are moving to smartphones equipped with chips engraved in 4nm compared to 5nm on previous iterations of chips, all with correct battery capacities, even if certain models have a lower mAh count than the previous generation.

The current Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra offer 4000 mAh, 4800 mAh and 5000 mAh respectively. The S21 generation delivers battery life of between 90 hours and more than 110 hours on a single charge. Here are the battery capacities of the S22:

  • Galaxy S22 : 3,700 mAh
  • Galaxy S22+ : 4,500 mAh
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: 5000 mAh

The S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra should therefore offer similar endurance, or even a little higher for the Ultra model – although the arrival of a real GPU in the Exynos versions to which we will be entitled in Europe may well lead to a shared observation on this point. There is also still no ultra-fast charging on any of the models. Fast charging is limited to 25W on the S22 and 45W on other models. .

We shouldn't expect a revolution in the photo part of the Galaxy S22. With the previous generation, the S22 and S22+ share the same set of photo sensors. The main sensor goes from 12 to 50 Mp – This is a brand new GN5 sensor with 1 µm photosites. With a size of 1/1.57″ and the various pixel binding technologies this sensor should deliver increased colorimetry and a better night mode.

The first two thirds benefit from a new 10 Mp telephoto lens which focuses much more on the size of the photosites than the 64 Mp sensor of the previous generation. This ultra-wide angle should set the bar very high: the telephoto lens is still one of the most difficult photo sensors to master by smartphone manufacturers. That of the S22 offers a focal length of f/2.4 all with photosites of 1.12 µm (compared to 0.8 µm on the previous generation sensor).

It also delivers a real 100% optical zoom (3x) instead of the hybrid zoom of the previous generation. Finally, the two cheapest models use the 12 Mp ultra wide angle sensor of the S21 (with photosites of 1.4 µm). What we remember is that the photo part is progressing to capture more details and light on practically all the sensors, but without any major revolution compared to the S21 which were already excellent.

Samsung also uses the secondary periscopic telephoto lens allowing 10x optical zoom. On the selfie sensor side, the S22 and S22+ are entitled to a 10 Mp sensor with large photosites (1.22 µm). While the S22 Ultra inherits a more versatile 40 Mp sensor (it has 0.7 µm photosites that it can combine depending on the situation). The brand is therefore not yet ready for the latest 200 Mp sensor teased for weeks.

The range is structured around the same design language, but there is a clear visual distinction between the S22 and S22+ and the S22 Ultra. Overall, the design of the S22 and S22+ does not change too much compared to that of the S21. The first two thirds broadly follow the same design, with photo sensors grouped in a raised module at the rear.

This set adopts a different color tone as on the S21 generation. At the front, almost nothing changes. The screen takes up the entire surface of the smartphone, with the selfie sensor hidden in a punch centered on the top of the panel. The only difference is between the S22/+ and the S22 Ultra since the latter has curved edges, unlike the other variants which are satisfied with perfectly flat screens.

The back of the smartphone is very clean. The photo sensors are centered at the top left, and seem to protrude only slightly from the hull. Samsung has chosen not to group the sensors of this model in a raised assembly.

This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated changes. Since the previous generation, Samsung has made the Ultra model compatible with the S-Pen. Compatibility still very imperfect. For example, the device does not have any integrated storage sleeve that would make using the stylus practical. The stylus is only implemented as a gadget which is not essential for the user experience – unlike what it is on the Note range.

All this changes radically with the S22 Ultra. Samsung has in fact integrated a storage sheath into the shell like on the defunct Note. The stylus is now included with the purchase of the smartphone, since it is part of the device. Furthermore, Samsung has pulled out all the stops to make you forget the disappearance of the Galaxy Note.

The S-Pen, together with the S22 Ultra, allows you to offer a latency divided by three for an experience particularly realistic handwriting.
