Despite the crisis, the French still favored Tech products at Christmas. According to a study by the German magazine GamingGadgets, which was based on the volume of Google searches in the last quarter of 2023, the most popular Tech products in France are not those we might think of.

Indeed, while consoles are usually the big stars of Christmas, none manages to take first place in searches. They nevertheless remain well represented since two models appear in the Top 5.

Airpods, Christmas stars

In an uncertain economic context, the French have turned to safe values. Thus, Apple AirPods received the highest volume of searches in France during the last quarter of 2023. Apple also sees its iPhone 14 also popular for the holidays (4th in the ranking) while the iPhone 15 is absent from the top 5.

The 2nd and 3rd places in the ranking are occupied by the Nintendo Switch which of course benefits from the end-of-year holiday effect but also the arrival of a new generation (thus boosting research), and the Steam Deck, Valve's portable console. The latter also reaped the benefits of strong media exposure at the end of the year with the launch of a new OLED model.

Finally, e-readers continue to attract the interest of French consumers. The “Kindle” query is in fact in 5th position in the Google search rankings for the last quarter of 2023.

An informative study but to be put into perspective

The study carried out by GamingGadgets gives good indications on the purchasing behavior of the French for the end-of-year holidays. First, the popular products are offered at very variable prices, from less than 100 euros to more than 800 euros (for the iPhone 14). A sign that the economic crisis has passed this way, the PS5 for example is not in the top while Sony has revealed a new Slim edition of its flagship console.

“This data offers a fascinating insight into which tech items people were most looking forward to as Christmas gifts,” said Nico Arnold, spokesperson for GamingGadgets. The study took into account searches from October to December, including searches for sales during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, revealing which gadgets France is most interested in this time of year.»

Despite everything, it is appropriate to put the figures from the German media into perspective, which only takes an average of the volume of searches on Google. Nothing says that these searches converted into purchases.
