iPhone 15: release date, price, technical sheet, everything you need to know

  • The iPhone 15s are the company's first smartphones to swap the Lightning port for a USB type C port
  • They offer thinner and therefore discreet screen borders on the Pro models
  • We are also talking about a new leap forward in photography with thanks to the new lens “periscope” – however, it is reserved for the largest Pro model

Each year, the ritual is more or less the same: Apple benefits back to school (most often in September, but sometimes also October) to unveil its new generation of iPhone. Four models are still offered, with the same screen sizes as on the iPhone 14 generation (6.1″ and 6.7″), in “standard&# variants 8221; and “Pro” :

  • iPhone 15 6.1″
  • iPhone 15 Plus 6.7″
  • iPhone 15 Pro 6.1″
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max 6.7″

The changes, rather major, indicate that this new generation is launching a new & #8220;super cycle”. Apple has indeed made a habit of launching a more ambitious smartphone every other year, and it does seem that this iteration has arguments to convince many buyers to upgrade to the latest generation.

In France, iPhones are selling quite well. Since 2020, they have been number 2 in sales behind Samsung. A share which is progressing in trend – suggesting that Apple is ultimately not that far from taking the crown from its historic competitor, at least in France.

We invite you to take stock of what we know about the four iPhone 15s.

Apple organized its famous keynote on Tuesday September 12, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. (Paris). The new models will be put on shelves on Friday September 22, 2023.

The exact price in euros of the iPhone 15 was expected to rise significantly this year. Since the presentation of the first iPhone, each year, many sources have been waving the rag of a significant increase in prices… which, moreover, does not always take place in the proportions announced. And finally, the least we can say is that Apple did not pass on its cost increases to customers as many sources announced. Judge for yourself:

  • iPhone 15: €969
  • < li>iPhone 15 Plus: 1 119 €

  • iPhone 15 Pro : 1 229  €
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max (256 GB): 1 479 €

Because it's forgetting that Apple is no longer simply a hardware company – the firm is relying more and more on its services, which constitute a growing part of its iPhone turnover. A strategy as prudent as it is clever which demonstrates that the firm understands that the smartphone market is today very mature, and that sales of units alone may at one point or another no longer be enough.

For the record, the iPhone 14/Plus were launched at the following prices:

  • iPhone 14 (6 ,1″): from 1 019&€
  • iPhone 14 Plus (6.7″): from 1″ ;169 €

Apple continues to maintain a clear difference between classic iPhones and Pro models. The most expensive models are the only ones to be entitled to the most recent screens, and the latest A17 chip. With the key being an increase in RAM which would increase to 8 GB compared to 6 GB on the iPhone 14 Pro.

The arrival of the USB type C port is widespread on all models, confirming the echoes coming from the assembly lines for several months. Apple has integrated a new UWB chip into all four models (for detecting AirTags, as well as improving location inside buildings).

In addition, the SIM drawer is disappearing in France from this generation as Apple has started to do in the United States on the iPhone 14. An eSIM will therefore now be compulsory to use the iPhone.

Apple has also improved the repairability of these models. An internal redesign makes it easier to open the device for repairs. Changing the rear glass will be much easier and therefore much less expensive, complex and hazardous than at present.

To conclude, screens with LiDAR sensors, Apple has opted for significantly less energy-consuming components on all models, which probably promises clear progress in terms of autonomy.

On the surface, the four iPhone 15s all have an iPhone 14 Pro look. By this we mean that the notch disappears definitively in favor of the new screens with Dynamic Island. But the technology of these screens remains different, with slightly less premium screens on the basic models, and thinner borders on the Pro models.

Apple changed the shape of the chassis a bit to give its corners a slightly more open angle. A titanium chassis (in a brushed rather than shiny finish) is now offered on the Pro variants, as are new colors. The arrival of brushed titanium (or rather an alloy that is easier to work with) seems like progress given the susceptibility to scratches and fingerprints of the surgical steel frame of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Titanium, however, has a tendency to oxidize, which can paradoxically lead to increased visibility of scratches if the firm does not add an adequate protective coating that is sufficiently strong and thick . Beyond that, there is also talk of a redesign of the Mute buttonwhich can act as a Action button like on the Apple Watch Ultra.

The photo part evolves relatively on two of the three least expensive models. An exception all the same: that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max which swaps the 3x telephoto sensor for a periscopic sensor allowing lossless optical zoom up to 6x.

As you can see in the illustration, the whole trick consists of building the sensor in the edge of the smartphone, with a prism allowing the light to be redirected 90°. All this takes up space internally, which explains why this technology, offered for several years on a handful of very premium Android smartphones (notably from Samsung), is slow to become widespread.

< p>The telephoto lens is, however, one of the points that is progressing most laboriously on the iPhone. The change is therefore excellent news for photo enthusiasts.

This year all four iPhone 15 models offer a USB type C port in place of the proprietary Lightning port. In addition to being able to connect the smartphone to many cables that you probably already have at home, this change promises improved fast charging and, above all, increased transfer speeds.

Until now, Apple was content to increase the USB 2.0 standard to 480 Mb/s (including on the iPhone 14 Pro Max!). The cable itself has become quite anecdotal for file transfer since everything most often goes through the cloud. But changing the connector capabilities also promises easier file management, especially video, for those who use their iPhone to capture high-quality (very heavy) video.

However, a new controller on the A17 Pro chip of the Pro models allows transfer standards such as USB 3 (up to 10 Gb/s). The change of connector is therefore rather accompanied by a benefit for users. It also becomes possible to charge your accessories with your iPhone by connecting the two with a USB type C cable.
