British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce new public and private investment on Monday to strengthen the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent program as well as the country's civilian nuclear industry, Downing Street announced on Sunday.
“The UK’s energy security and national security depend on nuclear power,” Downing Street says in a statement.
“This industry needs more skilled British workers,” it also says.
Rishi Sunak to announce public and private investments to strengthen the nuclear sector workforce and support 40,000 new jobs.
The Prime Minister will make the announcements from Barrow, in the north of England, a town he wants to see “prosper as a site for building British nuclear submarines”.
The government will partner with companies including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EDF and Babcock “to invest at least £763 million (€885 million) by 2030 in skills, 'employment and education'.
“In a more dangerous and contested world, the UK's nuclear deterrent at sea is more vital than ever,” Rishi Sunak was quoted as saying in the statement. “Nuclear provides consumers with cheaper, cleaner local energy,” he added.
