Man allegedly kills wife outside Calgary elementary school

Police responded to a homicide call Tuesday morning at John Costello Catholic School.

According to information obtained by CBC, a man allegedly killed his wife Tuesday morning in front of an elementary school in southwest Calgary.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., the Calgary Police Service (CPS) responded to a call of a homicide outside John Costello Catholic School. Police found the body of a woman there, who was pronounced dead from stab wounds.

Authorities later found her husband's body near the scene of the incident. As an investigation is still ongoing, the police refuse to classify the crime as femicide.

According to information obtained by CBC, the victim is said to be a mother of three, and it was her partner who stabbed her.

According to court documents, the two individuals were in the process of divorce.

Still according to CBC information, the husband was arrested in July 2023 and then released under certain conditions, including that of having no contact with his former partner and their daughters.

He was, however, accused of having violated the conditions of his release in September as well as in November.

Arrest warrants were reportedly issued against man, this Tuesday, for criminal harassment. Calgary police say the warrants were likely related to an earlier incident and not the homicide.

The man was scheduled to appear in court on February 6.

In a press release, the Catholic school board of Calgary says John Costello Catholic School is expected to reopen Wednesday after being closed Tuesday.

Council Calgary Catholic School is praying for those involved in this morning's critical incident, it reads.

A Victim Support Team from the City of Calgary Police Service has been deployed to provide emotional support to those affected by the situation.
