The Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, has summoned the mayors responsible for transport companies for a meeting which must take place on Monday.
L' Ms. Guilbault's press secretary, Maxime Roy, confirmed Friday morning the information first relayed by Radio-Canada.
During this meeting “the issues related to financing the deficits of public transport companies”, he clarified.
Relations are tense between these mayors and the Legault government over the deficits of transport companies.
Minister Guilbault was criticized for having declared last week that her ministry did not have the mission of managing public transportation.
Prime Minister François Legault went further, affirming that it was easier for mayors to “ beg” from the Quebec government, “than clean up their expenses.”
The mayors are trying to find a solution to the significant deficits that are weighing down transportation companies. These municipalities are considering several scenarios, including service cuts.
In the Montreal metropolitan region, the shortfall is estimated at $561 million.
