It is not a crisis, but a problem of standards which is hitting the Quebec agricultural world. This is what Prime Minister François Legault suggested on Wednesday, closely followed by the official opposition.

Farmers have demonstrated in several regions of Quebec in recent weeks to express their fed up, caused in particular by the disastrous drop in their income.

In a press scrum last week, the Minister of Agriculture, André Lamontagne, carefully avoided describing the current situation as a crisis, but on Wednesday, the liberal opposition returned to the charge.

During question period, Liberal Leader Marc Tanguay argued that there are multiple causes that explain the distress of farmers and that recognizing these causes is equivalent to recognizing the crisis.

But in response, Mr. Legault affirmed that the main problem originates from environmental standards which are higher in Quebec, as market garden producers told him recently.
