OpenAI announces a major update to ChatGPT, but not for everyone

While waiting for GPT-5, OpenAI continues to improve the existing model. In November 2023, the company announced GPT-4 Turbo, an improved version of GPT-4 that is more capable, cheaper to operate, and capable of processing longer queries. GPT-4 Turbo has been available to developers (and on their products) for a while, but only now is OpenAI also offering this improved version of GPT-4 on its ChatGPT chatbot.

Unfortunately, as you might expect, OpenAI is not offering GPT-4 Turbo to everyone, since this new version of the AI will only be offered to paying users of the ChatGPT Plus subscription. In any case, OpenAI highlights the changes that users should see when moving from simple GPT-4 to GPT-4 Turbo.

He claims that it improved the AI's abilities in writing, mathematics, reasoning and coding. “For example, when writing with ChatGPT, responses will be more direct, less verbose, and use more conversational language”, OpenAI also says.

The alternatives are more and more numerous

In any case, it should be remembered that today, alternatives to ChatGPT are increasingly efficient. Among these is Microsoft's Copilot assistant, which also draws on OpenAI technologies. For its part, Google continues to improve its Gemini model and recently announced the availability in preview, for developers, of its Gemini 1.5 Pro model. Otherwise, Meta is preparing to present a new version of its Llama model, while the French startup Mistral recently released a new model called Mixtral 8x22B (via a torrent link).

At this time, it is unclear when OpenAI's next generation of AI, GPT-5, will arrive. However, it is rumored that the company could lift the veil on this new model this summer. Currently, OpenAI is reportedly training this model and then still needs to perform safety and security testing.

  • In 2023, OpenAI unveiled a new model called GPT-4 Turbo, which is an improved version of GPT-4
  • This one is now available on the ChatGPT app and website, but only for paid users
  • According to OpenAI, GPT-4 Turbo improves AI skills in areas such as writing, mathematics, reasoning or even coding
