Authorities made a major seizure on Tuesday as part of their fight against car theft. They searched 26 containers in the port of Montreal containing 54 stolen vehicles intended to be sent overseas.

Of these vehicles seized, 19 were stolen in Ontario compared to 35 in Quebec. Some models seemed more popular than others with thieves, such as the Ford F-150, Toyota's RAV4, Lexus RX350 and vehicles built by Land Rover.

With information from Pascal Robidas

This seizure comes a few days after the summit organized by the Liberal government in Ottawa on the increase in car thefts and the payment of' #x27;an envelope of 28 million dollars to help fight against the shipment of stolen vehicles abroad, mainly to Africa and the Middle East.

The federal government estimates that approximately 90,000 cars are stolen each year across Canada, resulting in cost of repairs. #x27;around $1 billion for policyholders and taxpayers.

Tuesday's operation was led by the Regional Mixed Squad, which announced last week the creation of a new team made up of 30 resources from the Sûreté du Québec ( SQ), municipal police forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to support the SQ's Investigative Partnership Office.
